Hi Allison,

You can change the default app used to open a given type of file by selecting a
file and using "Get Info" window via the Command-I keyboard shortcut. Here's
how it would work for the example you gave of switching from Amadeus Pro to
iTunes as the default player for m4a files.

1. Select a file with .m4a extension in Finder. If you have many of these
already in your iTunes library, an easy way to do this is to browse your iTunes
music library and select an AAC track that you may have ripped from CD in the
songs table, and use the "Show in FInder" keyboard shortcut of Command-Shift-R.
(I guess that they now call this "Reveal in Finder" to make the acronym fit).
This will bring up a Finder window for the folder containing your track, with
your track selected.

2. Press Command-I in Finder to bring up the "Get Info" window for the track.

3. Use item chooser menu (VO-I) to navigate to the "Open with" option.
(VoiceOver should say "Open with, expanded disclosure triangle"; if for some
reason the entry is not expanded, use VO-Space to expand it). Then navigate
with VO-Right arrow to the pop up menu button.

4. VO-Space on the pop up menu button and change the selection from "Amadeus
Pro" to "itunes"

5. To make your new setting the default application for all files of this type,
Navigate with VO-Right arrow to the option to "Use this application to open all
documents like this one." followed by a "Change All" button that you can press
(VO-Space) before closing the get info window with Command-W.

This works quite generally for changing the default app to open a class of
files. People who don't want to use iTunes as a player can choose an mp3 file
and use the same procedure to change the default application to VLC, Cog,
QuickTime Player, or other music player of their choice. The usual reason new
users want to do this is to avoid having iTunes add tracks (again) to the
iTunes library when they play a track from Finder. But the solution to that is
to QuickLook the files by pressing Space bar to start the file playing.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
