The easiest way I have found it to put your folder in column view. Command 3. You simply navigate between folders using the arrow keys then. I have set column view as my default view.
In In list view if you want to do the same thing I believe you use command [ to move back a folder and command ] to move forward a folder. Personally I cannot be bothered with all that and simply use column view which is very easy.
