The only solution I have heard that really works is to use a terminal window 
within emacsspeak.  I have not tried this, but I have terminal fairly under 
control.

The first thing to know is that by default terminal continually keeps the full 
scroll back by default, so after 20,000 or so lines of text it gets unbearably 
slow.  You can reduce the scrollback, in the preferences or you can hit 
command-k before doing a significant command and this will clear the scrollback 
history and then the entire command will be in the scroll buffer.  One thing I 
will often do for local files is to pipe the output to 
open -a textedit -f 
This will push the output into a textedit window.  

If you search the archives I have a few other suggestions wrt terminal and 
being friendly.
