Generally it depends on how many procecssors your have and if the
process is making good use of more than one of them. So if you have one
of the latest boxes that has two quad-core CPUs you could have a process
consume up to 800%. If you only have four cores then I have no idea why
it would report anything north of 400%.

monitor. How can a process use up more than 100% of space? Often
when I am running something hard and heavy like Handbake the process
tab in Activity Monitor shows 560-580%. Thoughts appreciated.
