that's the only way to do it.

what happens is, when you set up your iphone for the first time, you register 
the device in your name. it is then locked in your name by that version of the 
IOS system. that's why when you dock your phone to itunes and in the general 
info window, it tells you it's registered to that particular person. So you 
need to restore it.

the tip here is as long as you have the files you use backed up in itunes, etc 
then you're ok, just reload them.

if there's info on the phone from the previous owner you want to use, such as 
previous programs, etc. te best thing is to use a 3rd party app which backs up 
the files and then has them available for itunes, etc.

this is the only official way of doing so. this is what apple have designed 
this interface for. security.
