That's why the way I told you is the best way to get it done.

Just do it like I said and you'll have no trouble.

IF you want no gap between tracks two and three, for example, select track one, 
then, set the default gap for zero seconds then select the next track.  Now, if 
you want a three second gap before the next track, set the gap in the default 
prefs window and then select the next track. 
I too tried adjusting this in the project window and found it could not be done 
that way.
