Hi Paul

I can't direct you to written instructions but I'll try to put down exactly
what I do.

By the way, I don't commonly use this gesture with podcasts preferring to use a
third party podcast catcher. the gesture is a standard IOS one and can be used
in a number of apps where there is a list of items. You can use it in some text
editors to delete particular files.

I checked that it did still work in the current release of IOS 5 with podcasts
and it does. I could only get it to work about one in three. As I said it's a
bit tricky. Anyway here we go.

Bring up the list of podcast episodes from which you wish to delete an episode.

Run your finger down the screen on the left hand side. You should find the
button to go back to the list of subscribed podcasts at the top. Then the
search field and then the list of episodes.

Stop when you get to the one you want to delete. The real point of doing this
is to find where physically on the screen the podcast episode title is located.

Now lift your finger a little and do the pass through gesture. This is where
you double tap but you hold your finger on the screen after the second tap
rather than lifting it. As you hold your finger still you will hear a rising
three tone sound. As soon as you hear this, quickly swipe your finger to the
right. Do not lift your finger before doing the swipe and be as careful as
possible to move straight across the screen. I think this is the difficult
part. As far as I can tell you need to travel very close to exactly parallel to
the top of the phone. Imagine you are drawing a line through the written
podcast episode title.

Now if it worked there will be a button to confirm the deletion. The button
will appear after the episode you are trying to delete. You can swipe around to
find this if you like. In swipe order it should be directly after the episode
in question.

You can just double tap on this button to confirm the delete.

I hope this works for you.

The pass through gesture is the same one you would use to put your device into
edit mode when moving apps and deleting them.

Good luck.

I would recommend getting a third party podcast app like Downcast. You won't
have to worry about all this then. That said the pass through and cross out
gesture is probably one worth learning. You never know when it will be useful.
You can check out a «quick review I did for the Downcast app at
