Hi Wes. First, we ask questions about iPhones and iPads on here all the time. Many times they relate to the Mac anyway, and they are starting to be closely related questions too.
It is not a is not a silly question on the iPhone that you asked. I couldn't get it to work at first, until I tried tapping on the on-screen shift three times instead of twice. Just remember that when the directions say once or twice, we've got to do an extra one. I got it to work when I did that.
