Hi, Gatekeeper is just a way to protect against malware, thus not allowing any unsigned apps to be ran. You can install them, however, but when you launch them for the first time, the system checks against Apples blacklist of developers to see if said developer is on the list, therefore rendering any app by that dev useless. Courtney is right, in that you can indeed change the setting to act like previous versions of OS X, but one would think that's not really recommended. I personally like Gatekeeper as a security measure, and think it will help users truly decide which apps they want to install from 3rd-party sources.
