Hi Ioana,

None of the apps that come from the Mac App Store arrive in .dmg files. That
format is only used for download distributions you get from the developer's web
site. Sometimes those downloads contain additional components in their
unpacked folders that are not distributed with the App Store version of the
product, either because these are non-standard features or because they do not
match the App Store guidelines. Examples of this are the MoveAddict app
(useful in pre-Lion distributions) to cut and paste files and folders, which
came with a special preference pane for VoiceOver users who could not access
icons in the status menu bar, and the DVDRemaster Pro program, that comes with
Fairmount and other freely distributed programs for working with copy protected
media.

At a guess, you're reading documentation that describes the open source
distribution of Growl from their main web site. The ".dmg" file extension
stands for "disk image", and refers to the fact that many of the software
applications you install on the Mac are treated like mounted disk drives for
the purposes of system privileges. You either unpack the application and any
relevant folder contents or, in cases where the application has to work
closely and interact with or control other system applications and cannot just
be used stand-alone, you may have to run an installation. When you're
finished, you either move the unpacked application to a permanent folder (e.g.
Applications or Utilities), or in the case of installed applications, this is
handled for you. Then you can eject the .dmg file -- like unmounting a disk --
and move it to the Trash.

I don't want to confuse you, since I'm not using Growl on my new Lion install,
but there's also a version of Growl called "Growl Fork" that is patched for
Lion, that specifically handles notifications for items like downloads and
email. You can find the reference to it, as you can for most current Mac
programs, at the MacUpdate site by Googling the name and "macupdate":
• Growl Fork at MacUpdate:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/41038/growl-fork

You can also read about this in a recent LifeHacker article from December 2011:
"Growl Fork Is a Free Version of Growl that Works Properly in Lion"
<http://lifehacker.com/5866255/growl-fork-is-a-free-version-of-growl-that-works-properly-in-lion>

This might entail more work to install, though, since I think you may need to
download the latest version of Xcode developer tools (free) from the App Store
. Just something to keep in mind as an alternative.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
