On a Macbook Pro with 10.7.3 here. Macs can be configured to activate those functions without or without "fn" being depressed at the same time as the function key. Have you tried just F1? (See System Preferences, then Keyboard, then the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" checkbox for your settings.)
