One thing I did with my mac mini was to set up at least one app to run at login time. In my case, I chose terminal as I do like to go into the shell quite often. For some reason, when I do this VoiceOver will always come up talking after login and the finder focuses me on the desktop. I have terminal start but be hidden; otherwise, it would probably take focus.
