You can upgrade but please be aware that if your system is current, a downgrade is REFUSED as the firmware is upgraded on install of 10.7 and the drive partitioning behaviour also changed. if you run into difficulties with an installation, use ONLY your recovery media to reset the system as retail disks will not perform a complete wipe of the firmware directly.
I've been there and done that many times for both clients and myself.
