I believe we found the problem. I had to call Apple Care and ended up speaking 
to a senior advisor. It turns out Apple Mail went into a loop with IMAP. It 
would try to send a message, fail, then try to store that unsent message on the 
server which it couldn't reach in the first place, fail, repeat. He had me 
clean out my .OfflineCache directories buried within ~/Library/Mail. Wow.
