Jenny, Try this. Press VO-comma to get into the application preferences and make sure you're in the Viewing pane. Hint: the first option there will be to toggle Classic mode on or off. In this pane, VO-rightarrow all they way through the options until you get to a checkbox that says "Show most recent message at the top." Uncheck this item. I have it unchecked on my system and my oldest messages are on top and my newest messages are at the bottom of all my lists. Right now, I don't know where any sorting of ascending/descending options are but this checkbox item should do it for you.
