After much googling and endless frustration with emails which just kept reappearing after I deleted them multiple times from my inboxes, I removed all my mailboxes and added them again. This seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks for the suggestions. I still don't know what caused such a thing to happen, but it was extremely irritating.
