Furthermore, after disabling the placement of newest message first, if you keep threading on you can move up and down in the message list and notice a treeview with collapsed nodes for the thread. Just right arrow on that node and the neoldest message in that thread should be up first. I forget exactly where I did it but I have all nodes collapsed by default and further, I can hear VO speak the unread status of unread messages because I have the preview pane turned off.
