I first would recommendyou go into gmail on the web, then settings, pop/imap forwarding. See if there's a setting there for pop, also look there for instructions,as the port numbers might be different for pop. On apple mails prefs then you'll change your incoming server in accounts>gmail to pop.gmail.com and leave outgoing as is.
