Must have missed this in my internet wandering. The 4th screen reader survey results were released May 4th by the folks at WebAIM:

http://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey4/

Tons of details in the report but here are the interesting bits I noticed:

JAWS is still the primary screen reader, but usage continues to decrease as usage of NVDA and VoiceOver increases

72% of the respondents use a screen reader on a mobile device, up from only 12% three years ago.

iOS device usage is significantly increasing and well above that of the standard population. Screen reader users represent a notable portion of the iOS device user market. Usage of Android devices is well below that of non-disabled users.

The items that cause the most difficulty on the web remain largely unchanged over the last 2.5 years, with inaccessible Flash content and CAPTCHA being the most problematic.

Apple and iOS users made up 11.9% of respondents (87% for Windows).

9% of respondents listed VO as their primary screen reader while jaws dropped to 49.1% (59.2% on 12/2010, 66.4% on 10/2009).

Commonly used screen readers still have 64% on Jaws followed by 21% Window Eyes and 31% VoiceOver. VO and NVDA continue to increase while Window-Eyes remains kind of flat.

27.7% used braille output.

Browser use seemed to reflect the general market with only 8.5% on Safari and the bulk of users on variations of IE along with 20% on Firefox.

98.6% said they had javascript enabled.

58.5% of mobile platform users were on iOS followed by 20.3% on Nokia.

Mobile screen reader users were %48.7 VO followed by 17.9% Nuance Talks.
