Hello Harry, You're making life more difficult for yourself than it need be.
To create a new event, press Cmd-n and type something like: "Dinner with parents at 8 pm on Sunday 22 August". Then press Return and navigate once to the right where you'll find "event details scroll area". interact with the scroll area and you can edit the event, adding in any missing details and choosing the appropriate calendar. iCal is one of the applications that improved drastically with Lion.
