Hi, You are correct with respect to problems being carried over from one version to another. Depending on the problem, some are eliminated due to the newer components installed and some continue or are exacerbated. So, it is, in many cases, an individual machine and personal experience that will determine which process to proceed with.
With respect to the upgrade of one OS to another as in Panther to Tiger, or Lion to Mountain Lion, the upgrade process has been around as long as I can remember. I performed upgrade installs back in the OS 7, 8, 9 days and also used the upgrade process for my upgrade from Panther to Tiger when VO was first introduced. Maybe I shouldn't have opened this can of worms. Later...
