Yes, and I think I've discovered something, and it's really weird. I have found two ways around this. One is as I said earlier; lock the control and option keys with control option semicolon. Then you don't have to press the control and option keys, and you press the same command to get out.
But, here's the weird thing. If you want to use the left control option space, if you're careful to not press the control and option keys too quickly together, then it works ok. But if you're in a hurry and you got into a habit like I did and you press them too quickly together, then it doesn't work. So, I have been trying to change my bad habit and so now I make sure to press the control key slightly before pressing the option key.
