Hi Donna,
Just tested out the hotkey for muting and unmuting VoiceOver with Skype. I 
don't have the newest version, I have 5.3.
I didn't have any problems losing speech after a call and unmuting my speech. I 
checked to see if Option-V might be a Skype function but it didn't do anything.
Sorry about that.
Interestingly, in the keyboard commanders, there is a mute speech toggle and a 
mute VoiceOver toggle. Don't know what the difference is.
