Hey Caitlyn. Two separate deals here: The dictation app and the Speakable Items app. First, I don' know of anyone who's gotten Speakable Items to work very well, other than "what time is it." Useful, a good conversation piece, but… a lot of the other speakable items don't seem to work that well most of the time.
Second: Dictation. If you his the function key (or whatever you're using for a shortcut) twice, you hear the "I'm listening," low B-flat tone Talk into your microphone, and when you're done, tap that shortcut key once again, and you'll hear the high b-flat tone. Within a second, you should hear VO speak the things you just babbled.
