Hi,

To make column View your Default, open a window in the finder (like Macintosh 
HD), press cmd-3 to make sure you're in column View, press cmd-j to bring up 
the View options and check the box to always open in Column View.

Another way to attack this is to set your Finder to always open folders in a 
new window.  go to the Desktop, press cmd-comma to bring up the Finder 
Preferences and check the box to have the Finder always open folders in a new 
window.  Years ago this used to be the default but it was changed a couple of 
cats ago.
