I'd love an answer to this too. It's a minor annoyance, but if its something 
that can be fixed, it would make Mountain Lion
virtually perfect for me. Like you, I've unchecked the kind column with no 
effect. I liked the way finder was read in
previous versions of OSX, and for me, list view is vastly preferable to the 
other options, but changing to another view
doesn't solve the problem and just makes things even weirder, at least for me. 
So, if you find an answer to this, please let
me know. (smile)

Is there any way to stop VoiceOver from anouncing the kind of item you are 
focused on in finder? I've disabled the Kind
column in the view options, but I still hear things like, "application", 
"folder", "wave audio file", "unix executable file",
etc.
