Andrew,

For me, it involved going to "Account Settings" in my Google Mail on the web 
and unchecking the labels so they wouldn't' show up in my imap list anymore.  
This stopped it for me.  That settings area can be kind of hard to get to, or 
at least it was for me, but I've recently discovered that there is also not an 
accessible way of creating a gmail account.
