I have my MacMini hooked up to the home theatre and it sounds great. I used the digital optical output and run it to the digital optical in on the receiver. It does all the 5.1 output from DVDs and such as well although you lose volume control on the mini and have to do that through the receiver instead.

one thing i love about apple TV is that our good speakers are hooked up to our TV and so I can use my iPhone to listen to my play lists, Pandora, or Songza on my good speakers through the apple TV through air play.

No, you can't use an Apple TV without a regular TV. The Apple TV is just a little box that connects to your regular TV by HDMI kable.

films/tv programmes which `i'd like to watch/listen to with

else is Apple TV for? I've gathered from searching through some

    Apple TV?

. Among other things it allows you to stream iTunes content to
your TV from either the iCloud or a Mac, iPod, iPHone or iPad.
You can, for example, rent movies from the iTunes store directly
from the Apple TV, or air play your music from your iPHone
through your TV. But you do need a regular TV to connect the
    Apple TV to.
