Usually you need a pre-amp for a mic before it can go into a line-level input like on the mac. Do you have such a box inline or built into the mic? If so, those usually take power from a battery or phantom power (which you won't have with the Mac). Maybe you have a dead battery. What model mic is it?

Hi. I just wrote not too long ago about the fact that my microphone, hooked to the
line-in jack on my MBP15 running ML, wasn't working. For a lark, I hooked the
microphone up to my guitar amp, and the amp to my line-in port, and it worked fine.
(With the added bonus that I could put some cool effects on my voice). However,
I"m not willing to leave the guitar amp hooked to my mac just to use Skype.

My theory is that one side of the stereo connection between mic and mac has
burned out or isn't connecting. The amp, being a mono guitar amp, doesn't care
about that. Any one got another option other than to replace the mic?
