Well, I've decided to disable Mail Notifications for now. I think the behavior of the Center is different in 10.8.2. Hitting escape doesn't always work, and I'm unable to hit VO J as I could before. Before, Mail notified one of a message and then it got out of the way. That doesn't seem to be the case now.
