You know, I think that was the problem. I haven't tried an alarm yet, but the 
volume was set to 12%. Oddly, I had change with buttons on, but the volume was 
still that low even though I used the buttons to turn the volume up to well 
past 12%. Oh well, hopefully this fixes it. I'll check my sister's phone later 
- I suspect the same thing is going on there. Thanks for the tip!
