Hi My understanding is that you just send a message as if it were a text message. If you are connected to wifi, and your friend has an iPhone, it will send as an iMessage automatically. You can't determine it yourself. So just connect to wifi and ensure you are sending to an iPhone and you'll be sending as an iMessage. Hope that helps.
