In continuation of this thread, I have found through an Internet
search that by going to menu/about this mac/more infomration, and
selecting the storage tab in the toolbar, you are able to see the true
disk space allocation. In doing so, I have been able to see that I
have a category called "other," which is using the additional 400 plus
GB space. However, I am not sure how to find this "other" area and
search and delete the files. The page I reviewed indicated this is a
culmination of an assortment of files. Alas, my search continues :)
