Hi Donna, I'm sure you have tried this already, but how about going to the audio books folder under home/music/itunes/media/audiobooks? Just a thought. I was able to successfully delete audible books this way. I hope this helps. I havne't tried the way you have with Itunes yet. Have a great day.
