It was always my understanding that it was there to help hide how many
keystrokes you type for your password. I do not know why it works like
this one one computer, and does not have the constant clicking on
another.

But with the extra clicking, it is harder for someone else within ear
shot to tell  how many keypresses you made to enter your password.
