Hi, The best way to do this, in my opinion, would be to open the external HD, Interact with the Toolbar within the open window, navigate over to the Search field then enter your search text. When you do things this way, the results will be limited to the items within the open window. So, in this case, it will only look within that HD. If you wish to narrow them further,, simply open the folder where you wish to look for the given search criteria then follow the same process.
