Hi there
My husband showed me a way to do barcode scanning that works fairly well. You
wouldn't want to use it every time you scan a can if you knew braille, but you
could use it to help label your cans in braille.

What I do is to first put the iPhone camera side facing the can. You use the
camera further from the screen for this purpose. Then you find the seam of the
can. Place it about a hands width from the iPhone. Then angle the iPhone
slightly, about a 45° angle. Start turning the can slowly; I usually turn it so
that it goes to the left. This will usually result in getting your feedback
almost immediately.

I haven't done much experimentation with other types of things like boxes. I
have a suspicion that I could develop a method for doing it, but haven't done
it yet.

I am not sure about the light, but it may affect it. If you have the light
program, you can check to find out if you have got light. Hey, I'm not saying
it's a perfect solution, but it's better than not having a solution at all. All
of these bar-code scanners that I'm aware of have some issues for blind users.
That's because they don't put the barcodes on there for our benefit and make
them nice and easy to find.

Regards,
Gigi
