I have been using rtf files to go back and forth which, of course, can be edited in TextEdit. Admittedly, what I am doing is not real sophisticated, but I have had no trouble doing it. I don't know about not being user friendly. It didn't take any time at all to figure out how to do exports.
I have had some interesting things happen between Numbers and Excel, but who know, that just may be me making some mistakes in setting up files. I guess it depends on what you need to do.
