Hi David. One thing i tried and I'm not sure if this has worked all the way. Since i have a mac, i used an app called google contacts sync it synced all my contacts from gmail and my phone and computer. I think the app cost 4 dollars. I think the only way you can do this is to set up a google account on the phone with mail, and a separate one with contacts.
