Yeah, but it was to my understanding that all that did was set your status to offline with things like Jabber and other messaging protocols it offers, IMessage not being one of them. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Not only that, but Messages isn't showing up in my menu bar extras.

Can't you just navigate to messages in the extras menu, open it with VO-Space and select offline?
