Alison, that's your problem right there. Mountain Lion takes up about 4 GB of memory. And you say you only have 53 gigs of memory? If I were you, I'd consider upgrading your ram plus deleting any unwanted or unused crap off your hard drive Or you're gonna be in for some major problems.
