You can use pretty much anything if you can get an adapter. For built-in options, modern macs (not macbooks though) generally have HDMI and Thunderbolt as monitor connection options. Confusingly, Thunderbolt can also be called Mini Display Port, so if you need VGA you can do what I did and get a VGA to Thunderbolt adapter. However, many sources will call this a VGA to Mini Display Port adapter, but my understanding is that it is the same thing. In addition, there are two types of DVI, if your monitor uses that, and my Mini came with an HDMI to DVI adapter but it was the wrong type. You can get either type D or type I, and I don't remember which the Mac ships with, but you will need to be sure the types match if you use DVI. By the way, the "serial port" you mentioned is very probably VGA - they feel almost identical. DVI feels a bit wider and usually has a large hole on one end instead of straight pin holes. HDMI feels a bit like an overgrown USB port, and Thunderbolt/Mini Display is smaller and square-ish, kind of like a slightly shrunken USB cord, the type that plugs into a printer.
