Okay, my test didn't come back to me, but another message from the list did, so
I think I can call this a success!

I have a gMail account, and part of what's so great about gMail is filtering.
This is basically a powerful message rules system, but it is web-based, so your
rules are applied to your mail on any imap-enabled client, such as your mac or
iPhone. I set up a filter to tell any messages from MacVisionaries,
Accessible-iOS, or [email protected] to go to my "apple" label. Of
course, that label caused a new 'apple" folder to be created on my mac, which I
added to my favorites bar so I can quickly access it with cmd-2. So, now I can
read my inbox with cmd-1, and then read my apple stuff with cmd-2, a very nice
setup.

The problem, though, was that messages I sent were appearing in the apple
folder, which I don't like (I realize some people prefer this, but it annoys me
to no end). After much searching, I found the answer, and it was so simple I
can't believe I didn't think of it. As you create a filter, you are asked for
the matching criteria for a message (who it is from or to, if it contains or
does not contain some text, if it has an attachment, and so on). All you have
to do is enter "-me" (that's a dash, then the word me with no spaces before it)
into the "from" field. Just as in the rest of gMail, the dash is the negation
operator, and "me" is automatically set to your email address. So, "-me" in the
from field is basically saying "any message from anyone who is not me". This
seems to filter out any of my sent messages while leaving everything else
intact. I'm now going to set up other filters so I can strip my inbox back to
messages only from low-traffic mailing lists and people not on lists at all.

Have a great day,
Alex (msg sent from Mac Mini)
