Hello Jed,

There are two things happening: 
1) Your security settings are checked to require a login password if your 
computer goes to sleep or if the screensaver goes on
2) You screensaver is set to go on if there is no activity in 10 minutes.

Neither of these settings have to do with your energy saver settings for 
computer sleep or display sleep, except that it doesn't make sense to have the 
screensaver go on after the display goes to sleep.

I think you can fix this by going to your System Preferences for "Security & 
Privacy". You may need to press the "Click the lock to make changes" button and 
supply your password before you can change the setting. Either uncheck the 
check box that requires a password for the screen saver or display sleep or set 
the pop up button to only have this kick in after a long time of inactivity -- 
like an hour.  Then click the lock again to prevent further changes.
