Never used (or heard of) fics before but if the command line doesn't
bother you then doing it from terminal would be a way to get started.
Just do
telnet fics.freechess.org 5000
and login.

Hi there folks,
I am looking for a way to connect to the free internet chess server
from the mac.
This is easy enough to do from either my iPhone or iPad, but I use to
do this in windows using Winboard. Please help if you can?
Warm regards,
