Can you be more specific in terms of what feedback you're actually getting from VO? Upon hitting return on a message, there should be a "message content" table that you're already interacting with, and pressing VO + right arrow should get you to the intended text. It's a bit difficult to direct you without knowing what voiceover is doing in favor of what you actually want.
