Actually, the cursor can be visible. You have to enable an option along the lines of "show selected text with dots 7 and 8" and your cursor will appear. Unfortunately, a bunch of text will start being shown with dots 7 and 8 below it, which gets old fast. So I guess it's a bit of a trade-off, but there is a way to show a cursor.
