Hi,

I'm not sure what you mean.  If your recording just the mic, it will pick up 
whatever the mic picks up.  I'm assuming your using headphones so Voiceover 
doesn't get picked up by the mic right?

In regards to the volume, you want to go to system preferences/sounds and 
select the input tab.  Under the built in microphone, use the slider to 
increase the gain.
