Hi All, Hoping that someone has some experience to share with me here, I'm looking for both an explanation as well as best practice advice.
I have my iTunes Library stored on a NAS, not just the iTunes Media folder, but, the entire library itself. This has the advantage that I can run iTunes on any of my three Mac computers and sync up my iOS devices etc with that Mac at that time without messages about my device(s) being currently synced with other libraries. Now, here's where the education comes in, along with any advice… I would like to be able to play content from my iTunes library on an Apple TV, however, would rather not use AirPlay from my Mac computer as this means that my Mac has to be switched on and logged into my account whenever I wish to use the Apple TV for this purpose. Within iTunes I have spotted a feature called Home Sharing, am i correct in believing that this simply enables a, pull, feature of the iTunes system, thus enabling iOS and other computers running iTunes to pull content from the machine running iTunes at the time. Whereas, AirPlay is a push service, Home Sharing is an always on, pull service. AirPlay you push a video etc to a device, iTunes Home Sharing though is a feature for viewing all content on another machines library and pulling what you want on demand. Now, my NAS happens to have a feature built in called iTunes server, this is less obvious to me, I've not worked out what this is and how it works… Can anyone help me at all please… Firstly is my AirPlay and iTunes Home Sharing observation correct? and am I correct that both of these need a computer running iTunes to be on and logged in at the time either service is desired? Now, what is iTunes server, and can it critically be used with an Apple TV, so that the Apple TV can pull on demand content from my iTunes library stored on my NAS? Many thanks.
