Yes, and no on the assumptions of running Linux software.
Yes, it can be done, but there are! some porting modifications on the back
end that have to be done/met.

It's a little bit tricky getting all the dependencies to make it work, but
once you get them, it works like a dream. Granted, there are only certain
apps which've been ported, but the number of available macports apps is
quite large, and is growing quite quickly.
